What makes it special?

I go on about products that do more for your skin and the Dr Levy 3Deep cleanser epitomises that ethos with its versatility. On the one hand you have a relatively gentle cream cleanser but a slight adjustment in how you use it and you have a fairly potent exfoliant with the glycolic and lactic acid being allowed to shine.

This certainly isn’t the cheapest cleanser out there but Dr Levy have put a lot of thought into this product and its multiple uses make it surprisingly good value for money.

Key ingredients

Glycolic Acid is an alphahydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to chemically exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells (corneocytes). This allows healthy new skin cells to come to the surface which contributes to improvement in skin texture, tone and radiance. It also helps to strengthen the skin barrier over time. Those with acne, particularly closed comedones (raised bumps with no blackhead) will also find glycolic acid helpful.

Lactic Acid isn’t just another alphahydroxy acid (AHA). Although it does also help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells away, it’s also a moisturising ingredient. Depending on the pH and concentration it can improve how well the skin holds onto water and keep the top layers of the skin soft and hydrated.

Organic rice beads act as a very gentle form of physical exfoliation. As a general rule I’m not a big fan of physical exfoliation, in part because most manufacturers go overboard and use substances that are too gritty. These very fine rice beads, however, are very gentle and in a relatively low concentration.

Sodium PCA or Sodium Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid is an intense moisturising ingredient that falls under the humectant umbrella. This means that it draws water towards it, hydrating the top layers of the skin. This means that after you cleanse you don’t get that tight and dry feeling that you can get with some cleansers.

Aqua (Water), Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Glycolic Acid , Lactic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, C12-13 Alkyl Lactate, Sodium Hydroxide, Coco-Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Powder, Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Cetearyl Glucoside, Sodium PCA, Sodium Chloride, Cetyl Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Chlorphenesin, Parfum, Benzoic Acid.

Application Instructions

As mentioned this is a 3-in-1 product and can be used as a cleanser, a mild peel and a slightly stronger peel in the following ways:

1 - Use it as a regular cleanser - small amount onto wet skin, massage gently and rinse off straight away

2 - For more intensive exfoliation - small amount onto dry skin, massage gently and rinse off straight away.

3 - For more exfoliation still - small amount onto dry skin, massage gently, leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing off.

Dr Levy suggest massaging this cleanser into your face with vigour so that you get more physical exfoliation from the rice powder. I think gentle massage is plenty and allowing the chemical exfoliants to do their work is the best option here.

If this is your first foray into chemical exfoliation then don’t use every day initially. You can build up from 3-4 times a week to daily use after 4 weeks. You may find that you’re able to use it every day but twice a day is a little much. Best to have a simple cleanser that you can use as a first/second cleanse an in the mornings.

For steps 2 or 3 above you’re looking at once or twice a week.

Gently remove make up with a micellar water or oil/balm cleanser
