Why it made The Curatory

It earns its place because one carefully used product can cover both cleansing and occasional exfoliation. That can be more useful than adding a separate scrub or peel that duplicates the same job.

The formula is still an active cleanser, so its versatility is only valuable when the skin is comfortable with acids and the extra exfoliation is genuinely needed.

It may suit you if…

A stronger fit if your skin feels rough or congested, you want to improve the look of texture, and you already know that glycolic or lactic acid suits you.

It may also suit someone who prefers a cream cleanser but wants the option of occasional, controlled exfoliation without adding another leave-on product.

Another option may be better if…

Choose a simpler cleanser if your skin is dry, reactive, rosacea-prone or currently stinging, flaky or unsettled. The same applies after a procedure unless your clinician has advised otherwise.

Another option may also be better if your routine already contains a retinoid, exfoliating serum or other active steps and cleansing is the place to reduce irritation.

What to expect

As a normal rinse-off cleanser, expect clean skin with a mild smoothing feel rather than a dramatic treatment result. Longer contact can increase exfoliation, but it also increases the chance of dryness or irritation.

This is not a standalone treatment for acne, pigmentation or lines. The useful outcome is a comfortable cleanse with optional texture support when used consistently and selectively.

Product overview

This is a really interesting product. It’s a non-foaming, cream-based cleanser which gently exfoliates using two different AHAs (glycolic and lactic acid) as well as having a little rice powder for some light physical exfoliation. Dr Levy pitch this as a 3-in-1 product in that it can be used as a regular cleanser but can also be put on dry skin for variable periods of time more chemical exfoliation - a little chemical peel if you like.

With a couple of exceptions I’m not usually a fan of leaving cleansers on the skin for longer than required but because of the gentle surfactants here it’s ok to leave on occasionally (see instructions for use below).

How to introduce it

For a regular cleanse, massage a small amount over wet skin with light pressure and rinse with lukewarm water.

If you are new to this product, begin with the rinse-off method a few times a week. Only try it on dry skin or leave it on for up to 3–5 minutes once your skin is comfortable, and keep that stronger use occasional.

Do not scrub to make the rice powder feel more active. Reduce frequency or return to a plain cleanser if you notice persistent tightness, stinging or flaking.

Glycolic Acid

An exfoliating AHA that helps to smooth skin texture and increase skin cell turnover.

Glycolic Acid is an alphahydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to chemically exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells (corneocytes). This allows healthy new skin cells to come to the surface which contributes to improvement in skin texture, tone and radiance. It also helps to strengthen the skin barrier over time. Those with acne, particularly closed comedones (raised bumps with no blackhead) will also find glycolic acid helpful.

Lactic Acid

A gently exfoliating AHA that also acts as a hydrator.

Lactic Acid isn’t just another alphahydroxy acid (AHA). Although it does also help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells away, it’s also a moisturising ingredient. Depending on the pH and concentration it can improve how well the skin holds onto water and keep the top layers of the skin soft and hydrated.

Organic rice beads

A gentle physical exfoliant that is completely biodegradable.

Organic rice beads act as a very gentle form of physical exfoliation. As a general rule I’m not a big fan of physical exfoliation, in part because most manufacturers go overboard and use substances that are too gritty. These very fine rice beads, however, are very gentle and in a relatively low concentration.

Sodium PCA

An intensely moisturising compound that draws water into the upper layers of the skin.

Sodium PCA or Sodium Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid is an intense moisturising ingredient that falls under the humectant umbrella. This means that it draws water towards it, hydrating the top layers of the skin. This means that after you cleanse you don’t get that tight and dry feeling that you can get with some cleansers.
