Why it made The Curatory

Many cleansers aimed at blemishes remove so much oil that the skin becomes tight and harder to manage. This was selected because it brings useful oil-soluble and exfoliating ingredients into a more considered rinse-off formula.

It offers a targeted cleanse while leaving the main treatment work to appropriate leave-on products and a routine that the skin can tolerate.

It may suit you if…

A stronger fit if your skin is consistently oily or combination, pores feel congested, and you prefer a foaming wash.

It can also suit blemish-prone skin that wants an active cleanser but has not been left dry or reactive by salicylic or lactic acid.

A gentler, non-active cleanser is usually the better starting point if your skin is dry, very sensitive, rosacea-prone or currently irritated.

Simplify the cleanse if you already use several exfoliating or acne-focused leave-on products and notice tightness, stinging or flaking.

What to expect

Expect a clean, fresh finish and some support with excess oil and surface congestion. Because it is rinsed away, it should not be judged like a leave-on salicylic acid treatment.

It will not clear acne on its own. Consistent cleansing, an appropriate treatment plan and avoiding unnecessary irritation matter more than making the cleanser increasingly strong.

This foaming cleanser from Mesoestetic is a great option for anyone with oilier or acne prone skin. It’s a great balance between being a gentle cleanser with mild surfactants and soothing ingredients whilst still packing a punch with acne-fighting salicylic acid and exfoliating lactic acid. As if that isn’t enough, it also has Mesoestetic’s proprietary Urban D-Tox blend which helps to reduce inflammation associated with outbreaks. I particularly like the addition of menthol which has a cooling and calming effect for inflamed skin.

How to introduce it

Apply one pump to wet skin, massage gently over the face and neck, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Start once daily, usually in the evening. Morning and evening use may suit consistently oily, tolerant skin, but reduce frequency or alternate with a plain cleanser if the skin begins to feel tight.

If you wear heavy make-up or water-resistant sunscreen, remove that first rather than repeating an active cleanse aggressively.

Salicylic acid

An exfoliating BHA that helps to increase skin cell turnover and support the treatment of acne.

Salicylic acid is a betahydroxy acid (BHA) that has a number of benefits, particularly for acne-prone skin. Its most well studied benefit is as a chemical exfoliant, particularly when with a lower pH. This increases how quickly skin cells turnover, bringing healthy skin cells to the surface. It’s also a hydrophobic or oil-loving molecule so helps to break down excess sebum and unclog the oxidised sebum trapped in pores (black heads). If that weren’t enough, salicylic acid is also anti-inflammatory and helps to calm redness associated with acne.

Lactic Acid

A gently exfoliating AHA that also acts as a hydrator.

Lactic Acid isn’t just another alphahydroxy acid (AHA). Although it does also help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells away, it’s also a moisturising ingredient. Depending on the pH and concentration it can improve how well the skin holds onto water and keep the top layers of the skin soft and hydrated.

Chlorhexidine

An antibacterial ingredient that reduces acne-causing bacteria on the skin.

Chlorhexidine is an antimicrobial ingredient that not only helps to keep the formulation stable but also kills some of the bacteria responsible for acne. In a rinse off product like a cleanser it won’t have any impact on the healthy bacteria on your skin.

Lactobacillus Ferment

A post-biotic ingredient that optimises the skin’s microbiome by supporting healthy bacteria and the skin barrier.

Lactobacillus Ferment is a post-biotic ingredient that is a byproduct of bacterial fermentation. It helps to provide the optimum conditions for your own healthy bacteria whilst keeping the pH of the product slightly acidic to match the pH of your skin. Together this helps prevent damage to the skin barrier that can often be associated with using lots of active ingredients in poorly balanced formulations.
