Which Type of Vitamin C Is Best for Your Skin?

TL;DR

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from oxidative stress, supports normal collagen production and can improve the appearance of uneven tone and some signs of photoageing. I consider vitamin C, or another suitable antioxidant, a foundational morning step for most people alongside daily sunscreen and, where appropriate, a retinoid.

L-ascorbic acid has the strongest direct evidence, but it is not automatically the best option for every skin type. It can be unstable and often needs a low-pH or anhydrous formulation, which may sting or feel too rich. THD ascorbate, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid and ascorbyl glucoside offer different textures and tolerability profiles. Having several forms means you can usually find one that you can use consistently.

Vitamin C in one view

  • L-ascorbic acid: the direct form with the strongest clinical evidence, but it is harder to formulate and may not be suitable for more sensitive skin or those with acne.
  • THD ascorbate: an oil-soluble derivative used in oils, gel-serums or emulsions that don't need a low pH.
  • 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid: a stable derivative that can be used in lightweight, water-based serums.
  • Ascorbyl glucoside: a stable, water-soluble derivative often used in light, multi-ingredient formulas.

Percentages cannot be compared directly between them. A 20% THD ascorbate serum is not simply “stronger” than a 15% L-ascorbic acid serum.

Why include vitamin C in a skincare routine?

Vitamin C is naturally present in the skin and acts as an antioxidant. Ultraviolet exposure and other environmental stressors generate reactive molecules that can contribute to inflammation, pigment production and the breakdown of structural proteins. A topical antioxidant does not replace sunscreen, but it can add another layer of support.

Vitamin C is also involved in collagen production. Controlled studies of topical vitamin C formulations have reported visible improvement in wrinkling and photoaged skin, alongside biopsy or molecular evidence consistent with new collagen formation [1] [2] [3].

It can also help with uneven tone by interfering with stages of pigment production. It won't treat every dark mark. Melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation and a changing pigmented lesion need different approaches.

This is why vitamin C is part of the Core Routine. It isn't more important than sunscreen, and budget or tolerance may mean you introduce it later, but it is more than an optional “glow” product.

Why formulation matters

A vitamin C ingredient must remain stable in the bottle, reach the skin and sit in a base that you can tolerate.

L-ascorbic acid is water soluble and readily oxidises. In aqueous formulas, research suggests it needs a pH below about 3.5 to penetrate effectively, with absorption increasing up to around 20% [4]. That acidity can sting. Other products use anhydrous, silicone-rich or oil-rich systems to improve stability, but these may feel heavier on oily or blemish-prone skin.

This doesn't mean L-ascorbic acid itself causes acne. The issue is often the whole formula: its pH, texture, solvents and supporting ingredients.

Derivatives are used to improve stability, tolerability or compatibility with different vehicles. Their percentages are not equivalent, and evidence for one derivative cannot automatically be applied to another.

L-ascorbic acid: the most established form

L-ascorbic acid is vitamin C in its direct form and has the clearest clinical history in topical skincare. Its limitation is formulation: it oxidises easily, and the low-pH or anhydrous systems used to deliver it may sting or feel cosmetically heavy.

It may suit you if you want the form with the most direct evidence and your skin tolerates the finished product. Another form may be better if acidic products sting, richer serums contribute to congestion or you dislike the texture enough to underuse it.

THD ascorbate: oil soluble and often easier to tolerate

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, usually shortened to THD ascorbate or THDA, is an oil-soluble derivative. It doesn't need the same low-pH environment as L-ascorbic acid and can be used in facial oils, gel-serums and emulsions.

This often makes it easier to tolerate, but the direct clinical evidence is smaller and tends to relate to complete multi-ingredient products. A recent comparative study found better results when THD ascorbate was combined with acetyl zingerone than when it was used alone, reinforcing that the surrounding formula matters [5].

3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid: stable and lightweight

3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is more stable than L-ascorbic acid. Laboratory studies show that it can enter and be retained within the skin, although the vehicle strongly affects delivery [6]. There is also laboratory evidence supporting antioxidant and pigment-related activity [7].

The clinical evidence is still less extensive than for L-ascorbic acid. Its practical advantage is that it can be formulated into light, water-based products without the same very acidic environment.

Ascorbyl glucoside: stable and water soluble

Ascorbyl glucoside is vitamin C attached to glucose, making it more stable in water. Enzymes within the skin can release ascorbic acid from it. Human skin-explant work has demonstrated this conversion, although the amount delivered was lower than with a well-formulated L-ascorbic acid product [8]. Cell studies have also shown collagen-related activity after enzymatic conversion [9].

Its practical value is that it works well in lightweight, water-based products and can be combined with other ingredients without a strongly acidic base.

Which type of vitamin C should you choose?

  • Choose L-ascorbic acid if you want the strongest direct evidence and tolerate the pH and texture.

  • Choose 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid if you want a light, water-based serum for oily, blemish-prone or sensitive skin.
  • Choose ascorbyl glucoside when you want a stable water-based derivative, particularly within a targeted formula for post-acne marks.

These are starting points rather than rigid rules. Concentration, packaging, pH, supporting antioxidants and the complete vehicle all affect the result.

How to use vitamin C

Vitamin C is usually easiest to place in the morning after cleansing and before moisturiser and sunscreen. Once daily is enough for most people.

Start every other morning if you are sensitive or are introducing several products. Increase only when your skin remains settled. Vitamin C can generally sit alongside niacinamide, peptides and most other morning ingredients, but there's little benefit in layering so many active products that the routine becomes irritating.

Store the product according to its instructions. L-ascorbic acid is particularly prone to oxidation. A marked darkening, unusual smell or change in texture can suggest that the formula is degrading.

When to seek individual advice

Pause and seek advice if a vitamin C product causes persistent burning, swelling, a worsening rash or significant breakouts.

Individual guidance is also useful if you have active eczema or rosacea, are already using several prescription or high-strength treatments, or are trying to treat persistent or changing pigmentation. A vitamin C serum shouldn't delay assessment of a changing pigmented lesion or replace appropriate treatment for acne, melasma or another skin condition.
