Dr Max’s view

Why I chose it

Retinoids have some of the strongest evidence in cosmetic skincare, but a product only helps if it is tolerable enough to use consistently. Crystal Retinal earns its place because the graded strengths make that progression easier to manage.

The formulation is designed to support gradual improvement without turning strength into a race.

How to introduce it

Apply a pea-sized amount in the evening to clean, dry skin. Start with two evenings each week, then increase slowly only if your skin remains comfortable. Follow with moisturiser and use broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.

At first, avoid using other retinoids or strong exfoliating acids on the same evening. Reduce frequency or pause if irritation persists, and ask us before increasing strength if you are unsure.

Guidance continues after purchase. We can help you introduce, simplify or adjust this product.

Inside the formula

The ingredients that make this special

A closer look at the ingredients doing the most meaningful work in this formula—and what the evidence can reasonably tell us.

Retinaldehyde

A vitamin A derivative that helps improve skin texture and support collagen production.

Read the clinical context

Retinaldehyde (retinal) is a precursor to retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A used in prescription treatments. There is good clinical evidence that retinaldehyde can help improve fine lines, uneven texture and pigmentation by increasing cell turnover and supporting collagen production. It is generally better tolerated than prescription retinoids but can still cause dryness or irritation, particularly when first introduced.

Hyaluronic Acid

A potent hydrating ingredient that draws water towards it.

Read the clinical context

Hyaluronic Acid is a moisturising ingredient that helps boost hydration in the skin when combined with other moisturising agents. It falls into the category of humectant moisturisers that draw water into the upper layers of the skin. Works best when combined with emollient and occlusive moisturisers.

Glycerin

A well-established humectant that supports hydration and the skin barrier.

Read the clinical context

Glycerin has strong evidence for its ability to attract and retain water within the skin, improving hydration and supporting the barrier. Its benefits are well documented in dermatology, and regular use helps reduce dryness, improve skin comfort and maintain a healthy, resilient skin barrier across all skin types.

Vitamin E

A potent antioxidant that helps to prevent aging changes, support collagen production and stabilise Vitamin C.

Read the clinical context

Vitamin E not only helps to stabilise Vitamin C and make it more potent, it also works as an anti-oxidant by itself by mopping up the free radicals that cause damage to DNA, collagen and elastin.

The thinking behind the formula

More about Medik8

Medik8 develops and manufactures virtually all of its products at its ISO-certified innovation centre near London. Its in-house scientists focus on formulation, stability and ingredient delivery rather than following a trend simply because it is popular.

Crystal Retinal is a good example. Retinal is an effective but fragile molecule, so Medik8 uses encapsulation, a patented stabilising complex and protective packaging, alongside a ladder of strengths designed for measured progression.
