Why I chose it

What I like about Age Element Brightening Concentrate is that it gives Vitamin C a clear place in the morning routine without the richer or oilier finish that can make some antioxidants difficult to layer.

The combination of Vitamin C, niacinamide and shikimic acid may be useful when you want one lightweight antioxidant with support for brightness and uneven tone. It does not replace sunscreen and should not be expected to manage established or complex pigmentation on its own.

How to introduce it

In The Curatory routine, use 5–6 drops in the morning after cleansing and any toner or mist. Keep the pipette away from the skin, spread a thin layer over the face and neck and allow it to absorb before other leave-on products and sunscreen.

Begin once daily. There is usually no need to duplicate a morning antioxidant in the evening, particularly if your evening routine already contains a retinoid or another active treatment.

Reduce frequency or pause if persistent stinging, redness or dryness develops. Daily sunscreen remains important.

3-0-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

A highly antioxidant and stable form of Vitamin C great for sensitive skin.

3-0-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is the younger, slightly less well known but arguably cooler and definitely more stable cousin to L-ascorbic acid. Because it's more stable it means the formulation doesn't have to be quite as acidic meaning it's better for sensitive skin types while still having a potent anti-oxidant and brightening effect.

Niacinamide

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that helps to improve skin barrier and reduce pigmentation and redness.

Niacinamide is a jack of all trades ingredient. Most of its evidence base is for improving pigmentation but also acts as an anti-oxidant ingredient helping to reduce redness and inflammation as well as supporting skin barrier function.

Shikimic Acid

A gently exfoliating AHA that helps to increase skin cell turnover.

Shikimic Acid is part of the AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) family which also includes glycolic acid, lactic acid et al. These are known to chemically exfoliate and rid the very top layer of the skin from dead skin cells. All AHAs do this to varying degrees with other secondary benefits but shikimic acid is known to do this exceedingly gently. This means that you can use products containing shikimic acid daily with little to no risk of sensitivity.
